International Vocal Training & Cultural Exchange — Tokyo
Bridging cultures through voice, body and performance
In 2017 and 2019, the Japan Directors Association, a key actor in the development of the performing arts in Japan, hosted two international vocal training programs in Tokyo, dedicated to artistic exploration and intercultural dialogue.
Developed in close collaboration with You Yamagami, these workshops offered Japanese actors a rare opportunity to engage with the innovative vocal methodology of Nadine George, founder of Voice Studio International (London) — a reference in contemporary voice training for actors worldwide.
A Space for Artistic Encounter and Transformation
The core ambition of this initiative was to:
Encourage cross-cultural exchange in theatre and vocal practice
Deepen artistic dialogue between Japanese and international professionals
Expand performers’ expressive and vocal possibilities
Through immersive, practice-based sessions, participants explored the voice not only as a technical tool, but as a pathway to presence, embodiment and artistic freedom.
An Experiential, Body-Centered Approach
Led by Laurent Courtin, the workshops focused on:
Releasing the natural voice
Developing a deep physical and sensory awareness
Connecting breath, body and emotional expression
Innovative exercises drawn from contemporary vocal pedagogy enabled actors to rediscover their vocal potential while strengthening their expressive range and artistic confidence.
A Lasting Impact
These international workshops created a powerful learning environment where tradition met innovation, and where voice became a bridge between cultures. The experience strengthened professional ties and left participants with tools that continue to resonate in their artistic practice.
